A study published on the 27th by Dutch researchers shows that elderly men who consume high amounts of cocoa powder have a significantly lower risk of death from illness compared to those who never consume foods containing cocoa.
The 15-year study included 470 men aged 65 to 84 living in Zutphen, the Netherlands. Among them, one-third of the people did not eat cocoa powder at all, and the other third of the people consumed an average of 4.2 grams of cocoa powder per day. From 1985 to 2000, a total of 314 respondents died. Compared with those who never ate cocoa powder, those who loved to eat foods containing cocoa powder were only half as likely to die from various diseases as those who never ate cocoa powder.
The author of the report, Brian Buijers, is from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in Bilthoven, the Netherlands. Buijers believes that more research is needed to draw conclusions about the health effects of cocoa powder in a wider population. Nika Goldberg, a cardiologist at Lenox Ridge Hospital in New York City, said the study's conclusions aren't applicable to the general public because it only included men over 65. The study has been published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
